While a point spread still allows a bettor to wager on who will be the winner of a game/match, it also includes odds for the margin of victory. Point spread is a way for oddsmakers to make a matchup between two unbalanced teams more even by giving points to or taking points away from each team. Similar to the money line, a negative point spread indicates which team is favored to win and a positive spread indicates the underdog. However instead of the payout, it shows the number of points a team must win or lose by in order to cover your bet. Most often, the betting odds for point spread are -110.
Example:
Winning Team |
Point Spread |
Odd |
Explanation |
Team A |
-10.5 |
-110 |
Team A is favored to win. The bettor must wage $110 and Team A must win by 11 points in order for the bettor to win $100 |
Team B |
+10.5 |
-110 |
Team B is the underdog. The bettor must wage $110 and Team B must win or lose by less than 10 points in order for the bettor to win $100 |
*In this scenario, there would be no tie/push since the point spread includes a .5 and there is no way for a team to win by half a point. However, if the point spread was +10/-10 and the favored team wins by exactly 10 or the underdog loses by exactly 10, you would push and get your initial wager returned.
